Making strides against breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women—nearly 340,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2022. As part of our Georgia’s Own Heroes series, we’re honoring breast cancer.

Erin Nickson was 24 years old when she received her breast cancer diagnosis. Her treatment included a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and chemo. Erin learned her fertility could be affected, so she considered harvesting her eggs. With fertility preservation costing $10,000+, she chose not to harvest her eggs.

Despite the odds, Erin became pregnant and had a son. As the senior corporate relations manager for the American Cancer Society, she leads the Real Men Wear Pink campaign. She feels blessed to be a 12-year survivor teaching, encouraging, and inspiring Atlanta-area leaders to act and bring an end to breast cancer. She’s expecting the arrival of another baby in March 2023.
